Getting a new furry friend is exciting, especially when that furry friend is tiny and has a wagging tail! However, puppies don’t come knowing the rules. It’s up to you to humanely and patiently teach them. One training method is crating. Dog crates, if used properly, are not only a great training tool but are also an enjoyable place for puppy.
First, buy a crate that your puppy can use as an adult. Most wire dog crates come with a removable/adjustable wall which allows you to change the crate size as your puppy grows. Your dog should always be able to lie down, stand up and turn around comfortably. Next, make the crate fun. (Never use the crate as punishment or your puppy will learn to fear it. Fear may lead to anxious behaviors such as barking and whining.) Put Fido’s favorite toys and some comfortable bedding inside.
Washable bedding is best. Potty training accidents happen with puppies. Although, crating helps cut them down since dogs don’t like to “go” where they sleep. Feeding your puppy in the crate also builds a positive association with the crate. Lastly, anytime your puppy is in the crate, praise him. Follow these few simple steps and your dog crate will be a welcoming place for puppy.
